Around 31,000 years ago in what is now Austria, two newborn boys were buried together beneath a mammoth shoulder blade, their bodies painted with red ochre and adorned with beads. For years, researchers assumed they were simply two infants sharing a grave. Then ancient DNA revealed something more remarkable: they were identical twins, making them the earliest genetically confirmed twins ever found. But the site carried an even more painful secret.

Dental analysis showed that one twin died around birth, while his brother survived for roughly 50 days before also dying. The grave had apparently been reopened so the surviving twin could be placed beside his sibling, reuniting the brothers after weeks apart. That burial, discovered at the Ice Age site of Krems-Wachtberg, offers an extraordinary window into how ancient peoples handled twin births, and it complicates any simple story about prehistoric cruelty or neglect. Twins presented ancient societies with both practical crises and cultural riddles.
Without ultrasound, concerned Mother could discover she was carrying twins only during labor, after the first child had already arrived and another body was coming. The immediate challenge was physical: two newborns needing warmth, feeding, and carrying while a mother might be bleeding, exhausted, or dying. Twin pregnancies are dangerous even with modern medicine. Babies are more likely to be born prematurely and at low birth weight, positions can complicate delivery, and the uterus, stretched further than normal, may contract poorly afterward and increase bleeding.
The second twin can change position after the first is delivered, turning the final stage into an emergency. Ancient birth attendants had no hospital technology, but experienced midwives accumulated real knowledge of abnormal positions, manipulation, cord care, and bleeding control. Their methods varied, and some failed, but they were not passive bystanders waiting for myth to explain the chaos. Once both babies emerged, care became a group effort.
Two infants could not simply be handled by one mother alone. Someone else had to hold the first child while the second was delivered, then keep both warm, fed, and supervised. The burdens multiplied. Twins required frequent feeding, protection from cold and illness, and constant carrying.
A mother’s milk supply can respond to the demand of two babies, but she also needs calories, water, rest, and protection from disease. If she died or fell ill, survival depended on another lactating woman or a safe substitute, which was rare and dangerous in ancient times. Human babies are born unusually unfinished, incapable of clinging to a moving mother like many primate infants. They need years of intense care, and that care typically came from a wider network.
Studies of living hunter-gatherer communities show infants interacting with many caregivers, including grandmothers, older children, and unrelated group members, averaging around a dozen caregivers in some Central African populations. Twins turned child care from a family concern into a camp logistics problem, requiring more arms, more strength, and more people to carry each child during group moves. But survival was never guaranteed, even with the best care. Historical populations without modern neonatal medicine show that twins died at far higher rates than singletons, often one twin dying while the other lived, or both dying within days.
A community could do everything right and still lose them. That fact matters because a double infant burial does not automatically prove sacrifice or killing. Archaeologists must distinguish ritual from catastrophe using bones that rarely reveal cause of death. Two babies together could be twins, siblings, unrelated infants, or victims of disease.
The Krems case was clarified only because DNA established the relationship and dental evidence proved the different timing of their deaths. Without those tools, twin stories remain dangerously easy to invent. Written cultures were no more certain. Greek and Roman thinkers recognized that twins came from one pregnancy, but their theories mixed observation with imagination.
Some proposed that different parts of the womb produced separate children, others linked twins to abundant semen, divided seed, or conception by different fathers. The last idea carried explosive social consequences, because one woman delivering two differently meant the birth could be treated as evidence of adultery. Myth sometimes solved this by giving twins different fathers, one human and one divine, as in the story of Heracles and his twin Iphicles, one of whose fathers was Zeus. Roman literature shows twins could inspire pride, jokes about mistaken identity, or accusations of sexual disorder, but they were not automatically rejected.
Rome’s founding story depended on twins: Romulus and Remus, exposed as infants, rescued by a she-wolf, and raised by a shepherd’s household. Myths reveal the intellectual shock of twins, but they do not prove how real twin babies were always treated. A society could worship a twin ideal while making life miserable for the nearest human example. Cultures developed wildly different rules and interpretations for twins.
Some celebrated them, giving special names, rituals, or matching objects. Some treated the second-born twin as senior, imagining the first had been sent ahead as a scout. Others privileged the firstborn. In some societies twins were linked to fertility, weather, animals, ancestors, or gods, bringing gifts or obligations to the family.
Yet special status was not always gentle; a child believed spiritually powerful might be restricted, watched, displayed, or burdened with ritual duties. At the darkest extreme, some documented communities in Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania practiced twin infanticide, sometimes killing both infants, sometimes only one, and sometimes isolating or punishing the mother. The reasons were rarely simple starvation. Cross-cultural research examining over 270 ethnic groups found competing explanations, including the cost of raising vulnerable infants, beliefs that twins were abnormal or dangerous, gender, maternal status, community identity, and social pressure.
People did not always kill twins because they individually wanted to; they sometimes lived inside a system that defined keeping them as dangerous to everyone. A parent facing that belief was choosing under pressure from relatives, ritual authorities, fear, and a community on which their own survival depended. Infanticide and infant exposure also existed in literate states like Greece and Rome, where unwanted newborns were sometimes abandoned due to poverty, disability, illegitimacy, or household strategy. Exposed infants might die, be adopted, or be raised as slaves.
Twins could worsen the economic problem, but there was no universal law demanding their death; wealth, sex, health, and available kin or wet nurses all shaped the decision. Humans proved extremely inventive when converting a moral crisis into an administrative arrangement, sometimes fostering one twin, surrendering one, or keeping both. Twins could also be valuable. Two surviving children from one pregnancy could increase a family’s descendants without requiring another gestation immediately, a real advantage in high-mortality environments.
Research on historical populations suggests twinning could bring long-term reproductive benefits under some conditions, even while imposing severe short-term costs. Twins are therefore less an evolutionary mistake than a high-risk reproductive gamble. A tendency to release multiple eggs increases the chance of two surviving offspring, especially in healthy mothers with strong support, but can be disastrous under poor conditions. The mother’s biology creates twins, but the community determines much of what happens next.
Cooperative care transforms the equation. When food comes from several adults, when grandmothers provision mothers, when older siblings carry infants, and when milk can be shared, two babies become less impossible. That is why the same birth could be interpreted so differently under different economic and social conditions, and why beliefs themselves could change over time. The Yoruba of West Africa provide a powerful later example.
Yoruba-speaking communities became famous for high twinning rates and rich traditions surrounding twins, including special names and carved wooden figures known as ere ibeji. When a twin died, the surviving family might wash, dress, feed, and symbolically care for the carved figure as a continuing social presence, linking twins to blessing and spiritual power. Yet historical accounts indicate that earlier attitudes in some Yoruba communities included fear and infanticide before shifting toward reverence. The point is not that one simple belief replaced another everywhere at the same moment, but that culture is not a fossil.
A society can reinterpret the same biological event, develop new rituals, and move from danger to protection. That shift reveals something easy to miss. People do not merely react to twins; twins change people. Their survival forces new feeding arrangements, names, inheritance rules, sleeping patterns, alliances, and stories.
Their resemblance creates questions about identity. Their frequent, unequal health creates rituals around death and the surviving sibling. Many societies treated the twin bond as continuing beyond death, believing the pair shared a soul or life force, so losing one threatened the other. Modern medicine would reject the supernatural mechanism, but the observation beneath it was real: twins often faced the same prematurity, disease exposure, and deprivation.
When one died, the other was genuinely at risk. Ritual made that danger understandable and made grief manageable. Parents in the distant past were not emotionally indifferent because infant mortality was high. Archaeological infant burials, grave goods, careful positioning, repeated visits, and mourning practices show investment in very young lives.
Frequent death does not cancel attachment; it gives attachment more opportunities to be injured. The Krems twins make that injury visible. One boy died at birth, and his community buried him beneath mammoth bone with ochre and ornaments. For about seven weeks, his identical brother remained alive, fed, carried, and responded to by people who looked at a child who resembled one already underground.
Then he died, too, and the grave was reopened so he could be placed beside his sibling. Imagine the practical difficulty: frozen or compacted earth had to be disturbed, the protective mammoth shoulder blade accessed, the first burial remembered and handled carefully. This was not disposal performed at the edge of camp. It was an act organized by people who understood that the second infant belonged beside the first.
We do not know whether they believed the twins shared a spirit, whether their birth was celebrated or feared, whether the mother survived, or even who reopened the grave. That uncertainty is the honest boundary of archaeology. One beautiful burial cannot represent every ancient society. It cannot erase communities that exposed twins, families that fostered one child elsewhere, mothers who died in labor, or infants who vanished without any preserved ceremony.
But it gives a direct answer to the question, what did ancient humans do when they had twins? First, they tried to understand what had just happened. Then they did whatever their bodies, resources, beliefs, and social rules allowed. They called for help, they delivered the second baby, they warmed two small bodies, they found more hands, they shared milk, they rearranged work, they assigned names and birth order, they told stories explaining why one pregnancy had divided into two lives.
They watched for danger. They celebrated, feared, fostered, exposed, protected, or mourned them. Sometimes they failed because twin birth was medically brutal. Sometimes they chose cruelty because their society had taught them cruelty was protection.
And sometimes they accomplished something quietly extraordinary. They kept both alive without hospitals, formula, incubators, or any guarantee that the next winter would spare even one. The real difference between ancient and modern twins is not that ancient people were more superstitious or less loving. Modern parents also give twins matching names, matching clothes, private rituals, and theories about a mysterious connection between them.
We have simply moved most of the biological explanation into embryology, and most of the emergency into medicine. The emotional problem remains. Two people arrive together. Everyone wants to know whether they are the same.
Life immediately begins proving they are not. One may be stronger, one may feed first, one may become sick, one may die while the other survives. Every culture then faces the same moral demand: see the pair, but also see each child. Thirty-one thousand years ago, one community did exactly that.
They buried two identical boys together, but they knew enough to reopen the grave because the second child had lived a life the first had not. Only fifty days. Still a separate life.
